We are very excited to offer two new products to compliment our existing product range. Woodchip and Mulch. This post focuses on the mulch.
At Logworld, we are committed to recycling as much of our arisings from our sister company’s Hedgesntrees Ltd tree surgery operations as is practically possible. All the softwood is chipped and burnt in our biomass boiler to provide the heat for our kiln. All the hardwood is split and dried perfectly in our kiln. This just leaves the arb chip which we produce every day.
Arb chip is all the woodchip we produce in our daily tree surgery works. Whether we reduce the size of a tree or thin the crown, or fell the tree we will always have to put the smaller leaf bearing branches through our woodchippers. This woodchip is always high in moisture and leaf content, which makes it unsuitable to be used in our biomass boiler. Our boiler, as brilliant as it is, is designed to only burn low moisture woodchip with little to no leaf content. So what to do with all this arb chip?. Hedgesntrees Ltd produce on average 5 tons per week!.
So around this time last year we cleared some space in our yard and started stockpiling this arb chip. Until then we had tipped it for free at local allotments and horse stables. We soon had a mountain of arb chip!. We left it for about 8 months to naturally season. The pile of chip naturally creates heat during the seasoning process which breaks down the leaf content. If you were to dig into the pile and put your hand in it would feel warm to the touch. The chip pile isn’t covered so its exposed to all the elements, rain, wind, sun and frost. All we do is turn the pile every now and then to ensure even seasoning throughout the pile.
At the end of 8 months the whole pile is moved to another empty bay. This is the final turning of the pile to further aid the even seasoning process we require. By now, the colour of the chip has turned from a range of light and dark greens to a pleasing uniform brown colour. The leaf matter has been broken down into small particles and has been mixed into the chip. The result is a completely natural mulch perfect for spreading on your garden beds.
Mulching your garden beds offers the following benefits to your plants and soil. Moisture Retention, weed suppression, soil improvement and helps protect plants from extreme temperatures. Don’t forget it also looks great!. Our mulch is completely natural. Nothing artificial is added. Our organic mulch is far superior than inorganic products such as stone or rubber chips. Our organic mulch continues to break down naturally over time, returning some organic matter to the soil for the micro organisms to feed on. Also, rubber and stone can heat up in full sun increasing the temperature of the top layer of soil which can adversely affect the health of you plants. Organic mulch does the opposite-it helps keep the top layer of soil cool by absorbing the suns heat and trapping valuable moisture in the soil.
So if you’re looking for a completely natural organic mulch look no further than our mulch. Our 0.9 cubic metre size bag on sale for only £60 per bag with free local delivery offers great value.
