Summer is Here!

Its hot hot hot!. Summer is here!. This amazingly hot weather is naturally drying out our hardwood logs before they’ve even been in the kiln!. Theres not much shade in our yard at Buckland so the sun beating down on our pile of mixed hardwood is helping accelerate the drying process nicely. We are currently building up our stockpiles of kiln dried mixed hardwood here at Logworld in preparation for the log season. With these temperatures we’re experiencing at the moment the split hardwood logs will only need about half the normal time in our biomass powered kiln to reduce the moisture content to below 20%.

We are currently splitting lots of ash, oak and maple as these are the species of trees that our sister company Hedgesntrees have been asked to fell of late. All the timber sold to our residential customers is derived from Hedgesntrees arisings. All their work is carried out locally, typically within a 10 mile radius of our yard in Buckland, Surrey. Locally sourced hardwood timber split into logs and dried in our biomass powered kiln and sold back into the local community.

The moisture content is closely monitored during the drying process. Getting this right is the real secret to producing a product which burns well, and releases lots of heat. We try to reduce the exterior moisture content to around 10%. The exterior moisture content is the dryness of the log on the outside, including perhaps 5-10 millimetres of the inside of the log. The interior moisture content will be slightly higher, around 20%. The interior moisture content is higher for 2 reasons: Firstly, the moisture in the vascular system of the log on the outside is released easily and quickly, and must be removed before any interior moisture can escape. Secondly, we don’t want the interior moisture level to decrease too much. If it did, the log would burn way too quickly. The secret is simple. Remove lots of the exterior moisture to ensure the log ignites quickly and easily then regulate the interior moisture so it slows the burn down slightly but the energy is still released as heat, not steam. It’s a balancing act!.

Over the years we have also developed a very clear understanding of what makes a good pizza oven log!. We supply several local Italian restaurants who have big traditional wood fired pizza ovens. We know there a few things that must be right to produce restaurant grade pizza oven logs. The wood species type- It must be beech!. The moisture level-it must be very low!. The shape of the log- it must be longer and slimmer than normal shaped logs!. Beech burns hot and brightly meaning high temperatures are achieved I the pizza oven. Low moisture content ensures easy ignition and high heat output. Log shape means more easily stacked in corner of oven to allow more space for pizzas to cook!. We have taken this knowledge and now offer this product to the discerning residential customer who has invested in a pizza oven for their own garden. Our handy size bag of kiln dried beech logs is exactly the same product as the restaurants use, so don’t compromise on the fuel you use to create your perfect pizza!.
